Are parents supposed to go with you to new student orientation for college?I don't want be be embarassed lol.
Question:I just got accepted and will be moving to a fairly bigger city and my dad wants to go with me and he said one of his friends is going with his son to his college orientation but i just don't want to go all the way down there and be the only student with their parent with them. It's supposed to last approx. 6 hours with an intermission.Any thoughts?
Answers:
I went alone- though my parents were still in town that day- but that was 17 years ago. I guess protocol is determined by the University. I would call the admissions office and ask them what the protocol is- That way you have the official "word". They probably get calls like that all the time.
It depends on the day. If it is just 6 hours in the middle of the summer, then parents can go. If they don't want parents, there is tons to do on campuses and they can tour the school themselves and get lunch while you continue with the orientation program. If the orentation is a day or two before classes start, then parents are probably not supposed to be there.
yes, a lot of parents go.. it makes you more comfortable! not a bad thing at all!! helps parents let go too!
NO! DONT TAKE YOUR PARENT IT IS A NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION KEEP IT THAT WAY!! PLUS MOST COLLEGES HAVE PARENTS DAY A COUPLE DAYS INTO THE SEMESTER WHERE THERE ARE EVENTS THAT YOU AND YOU PARENT CAN ATTEND SO THEY CAN SEE THE SCHOOL AND SO FORTH!! THIS IS YOUR TIME!
My parents went to my college orientation. In fact, the college had a special orientation for them, separate from the students. Set up an agreement with your dad: If we get there and no one else's parents are there, go entertain yourself in the city.
There were parents at my college orientation, but the majority of students were alone. At one point in the orientation they separated the parents out and gave the students a special tour of the campus.
I'd say about 25% of the students brought parents, but I also went to a school that where the average age of the freshman class was in the early 20's and about half of the new students were either transfering in from other schools or had been in the workforce for a number of years.
Parents were encouraged at my new student orientation. They had a separate program for them during the day, but most students seemed to come with a parent. My orientation program was a day and a half, and everyone stayed in the dorms, even the parents. That way, you and your parents could experience dorm life for one night before you moved in. But like other people said, I would definitely tell my parent that if no other parents were at the orientation when you show up, that they should go do something on their own for a while.
