What is a word for both happy and sad at the same time?
Kidding...but seriously - Ambivalence
- the coexistence within an individual of positive and negative feelings toward the same person, object, or action, simultaneously drawing him or her in opposite directions. Confused (like Ralph Wiggum)
look it up.
And if a situation leaves you feeling happy and sad at the same time, it's bittersweet.
Bittersweet (in some situations)
If one feels happy and sad as a direct result of one particular situation, it's a bittersweet feeling.
If one goes between happy and sad and isn't really certain which is the real feeling it's ambivalence (to be ambivalent about something), although the second definition of "ambivalent" is technically the same as bittersweet.
"Melancholy," by definition, is actually gloominess. It doesn't signify the presence of both feelings. More Related Questions & Answers...
